Pierre BAHUREL is the Director-General of Mercator Ocean International, an expert organization that monitors and forecasts the global ocean environment for operational, scientific, and policy purposes. Pierre founded Mercator Ocean in 1995, leading and developing it since then, promoting general digital oceanography services and multinational governance to create a unique center in Europe. He has brought together a large community of European partners to provide the EU's Copernicus marine service, recognized by thousands of users on all continents, offering them a unique digital description of the ocean environment on an open and free basis. He is deeply involved in the international structuring of operational oceanography for a sustainable ocean, supporting a green and digital transition of society where ocean knowledge is accessible to every citizen. He is committed to contributing to the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development and chairs the Ocean Decade Prediction Collaboration Centre, whose main goal is to improve and develop ocean prediction capacity on all continents. Under his leadership, Mercator Ocean International has begun its transformation into an intergovernmental organization dedicated to digital oceanography and ocean prediction, aiming to better support regional and global organizations in their scientific and policy development for ocean sustainability.
