Ambassador Peter Thomson is the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for the Ocean, leading global efforts to implement UN Sustainable Development Goal 14. This goal focuses on conserving and sustainably using ocean resources. He served as the President of the United Nations General Assembly from 2016 to 2017. Ambassador Thomson represented Fiji as its Permanent Representative to the UN from 2010 to 2016, chairing the Boards of UNDP, UNFPA, and UNOPS during this period. He was also elected President of the Assembly and Council of the International Seabed Authority. Additionally, Ambassador Thomson co-founded the World Economic Forum's Friends of Ocean Action initiative and is a supporting member of the High-Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy.
